It is an article by Dominic Green on Jorunian martial arts. Anyone familiar with Dominic's unique style will know what to expect. Owen (owen@sj.co.uk) JORUNIAN MARTIAL ARTS an introductory essay by Drenn Appolinario Vivit The original Old Colonial martial arts schools reputedly numbered over a thousand, many of whom are now lost to history. It is said that the majority of them originated in the eastern extremity of Earth's largest continent. Among the large number of 'genuine Terran styles' claimed by numerous and dubious academies all over Jorune are the styles of "Shaullin-Gonfu", the most consistently documented of all original systems due to the fastidious, nay, anal record-keeping of the Lunar Buddhist Temples, and the New Styles of Thantier, deliberately developed as a matter of sudden expediency from a number of the most effective Terran disciplines. The Thantieran styles are among the most physical, incorporating weapon techniques as well as strikes and throws; by Thantieran tradition, the first three styles were developed for, and taught to, every Thantieran colonist from an early age during the first dark days of the war against the shantha. The names of the styles appear to reflect this theory of their origin; Toolesookooyoozoo (Tlesken Hand System), Yookenyoozoo (New Sword System), and Yooyoozoo (New Flexible System). It is supposed that the Lunar Buddhist saint Da Xiang Jiao, who according to legend hailed from Thantis and was expelled for his Sho-Caudal conversion by the shantha Dhar Copra-Tra, originated the style of Choyoozoo from these original disciplines. Choyoozoo is the only Thantieran style to use the body's natural isho, and as such has been banned in many states of Thantier for many years, due to its inextricable association with boccord and muadra. >From the style of Choyoozoo, it is thought, the original Dalai Lama Bazza I conceived the idea behind the many styles of Shochido, the Lunar Buddhist martial art. Merging Choyoozoo with the Shaullin-Gonfu with which his followers were already familiar, Dalai Lama Bazza originated seven styles, each of which drew its inspiration from a Jorunian moon. The styles of Shalshosho (Shal Isho Hand), Southern Thailier Fist, Southern Thisting Pibber, Eye of the Storm Gonfu, Dharjeedo (Great Pushing Style), Dusho (Du Hand) and Launtrasho (Launtra Hand) were conceived and put into practice during this time. The Lunar Buddhist styles doubtless also took some inspiration from the renowned shanthic art of Ebitra, although there are perhaps more claims to this effect than may be reliably believed. Among the other non-human styles present on Jorune are the crugar styles. Held by crugar legend to have been developed in the period immediately following Iscin's death, they originate from a system of unarmed combat and stick fighting no longer taught, to the author's knowledge, in Temauntro, and entitled 'Lezershildirinkhantralle', or 'Lesser Children Control System. >From this system, it may be assumed, sprang the disciplines of Cugharimitsitsian (Cougar Imitation Boxing) and Antiskhinadralle (literally, 'man neutralisation technique'), the two classic crugar fighting styles. Other crugar systems, like Antiscinadralle, were developed specifically to deal with certain races naturally inimical to the crugar - Srishildirinadralle, an extreme style involving both terrifically high leaps and much ground-level manoeuvring on all fours, may have been influenced by both Cugharimitsitsian and Antiscinadralle, and is intended to deal with bronth. Raumkhelle, or Ramian Killing Technique, on the other hand, is a more cautious and subtle style, almost reminiscent of human disciplines. The ramian themselves, being a warrior race, have also originated a good few fighting disciplines, many of which mirror the crugar disciplines in being designed specifically to deal with certain races. Tchev-chira, or Scissor Action School, is, along with Atamaayoozoo, or 'Head-belly striking technique', from Thantier, the only Jorunian martial art developed to deal with cleash. Tchevrokent, or Bent Arm School, is an equivalent system developed to defend against humans, whereas Tchev-iridzent, or Wheel Motion School, is a powerful ground-level system supposedly effective against bronth. It is perhaps also worthwhile at this point to mention the widely taught ramian weapons school of Codichi-yachan-tche, or 'Coditch Mowing Sword', the distinctive mode of fighting of Ramian Gire, using a long hard-sabre in one hand, and a stabbing hard-dagger in the other. The Jaspian schools of martial arts are many, but the techniques taught are secret and normally not entrusted to those outside a particular family or social group. They have developed, so Jaspologists claim, from an original core of Terran self-defence techniques, combined with the observed strengths and specialties of various cygra and ramian disciplines. Many Jaspian children will be taught three martial arts from early childhood - an Antigire, or 'anti-ramian system', an Antisiger, or 'anti-cygra system', and an Antiman, or 'anti-personnel system'. Members of the Jaspian armed forces are normally also taught Antikafers, or 'anti-cleash systems'. Most Jaspian schools, being regarded as the 'property' of a particular family, are referred to by that family's name - e.g., the Khanat Family Antiman, an antipersonnel system popular with the Jaspian army. Finally, no treatise on Jorunian martial arts can be complete without a few words on the deadly secret fighting art of Trit Hon Trith Cneemeel o-Lotchonwon-a, or Iron Thriddle Entirely Non-confrontational Self-defence Fist, also known as the Gomo Last Resort. A thriddle, like a thombo, may be skittish, but like all creatures whose main method of defence is running away, can kick powerfully when cornered. When you next see a thriddle, take a good long look at the weight of muscle on those hind legs, and the length of those rear claws. Truly, there is need to fear a thriddle. JORUNIAN MARTIAL ARTS BY NAME Toolesookooyoozoo ('Tlesken Hand'; Thantier, origin beginning of the Anthroshanthic War) A multipurpose, hard style, with a wide variety of strikes using both open and closed fists, and a number of low kicking techniques. Yookenyoozoo (Thantier, origin beginning of the Anthroshanthic War) A style teaching the use of the Yooken, or Half-Naginata, the traditional fighting implement of the Thantieran nobility. Incorporates both sweeping and stabbing techniques. Yooyoozoo ('Flexible Fighting System'; Thantier, origin beginning of the Anthroshanthic War) A style involving throws, locks, and other wrestling manoeuvres, Yooyoozoo is more concerned than many Thantieran styles with neutralizing opponents without causing physical harm, and is often taught to Thantieran yords. Atamaayoozoo ('Head-Belly Striking Technique'; Thantier, origin 95 PC) A style using techniques similar to the ramian style Tchev-chira to attack cleash opponents, Atamaayoozoo is also of some efficacy against other races. Massoogootaeyoozoo ('Straight-Line Hand Technique'; Thantier, origin c.700 PC) A style developed in Western Thantier for defence against crugar, using to good effect the premise that a crugar hand or foot attack tends to be a circular, clawing action that can be easily forestalled by a rapid straight jab. All actions, including wardoffs, in Massoogootaeyoozoo are straight line movements Choyoozoo ('Energy Technique'; Thantier, origin c. 1000 PC) Developed from a combination of Massoogootaeyoozoo, Toolesookooyoozoo, and Yooyoozoo, Choyoozoo was the first Jorunian style to feature the effective use of isho to repel an attacker. Shochido (Literally, 'Isho Energy System', Seven Moons Temple, c. 1000 PC) Allegedly developed by the Dalai Lama Bazza I himself from the Thantieran style of Choyoozoo, Shochido includes the disciplines of:- Shalshosho - A striking technique which ignores the body of the opponent and concentrates on rapid, debilitating strikes to their incoming arms and legs, sometimes using shal energy to attack nerve points. Nan Thailier Chuen - A style using hard, heavy blocks to stop incoming blows, often involving the use of gobey energy. An opponent's hand or foot can be shattered simply by striking a practitioner of this art. Nan Thist Pibber - A straight-line style based on the development of incredibly rapid and powerful hand striking techniques, occasionally using low, fast kicks to put an opponent off guard and allow the delivery of a hand strike. Eye of The Storm - A circular style involving feather-light ward-off techniques and lazy return strikes that seem to glide in almost out of nowhere. Dharjeedo - Dharjeedo is based on the initial premise that in order to overcome an opponent, it is first necessary to unbalance them, and employs a great number of pushing and pulling exercises. Dusho - Dusho, as a style, seems wholly preoccupied with the breaking of enormous blocks of costly marble with the head. It is also unique among all the styles of Jorunian martial arts in claiming to teach a "buttock strike", also known as the Iron Buttock Technique, or the Sage's Head Buttock Formation. Launtrasho - The hand of a Launtrasho practitioner is known as the 'secret sword', since it can kill merely by touching. Launtrasho masters are also, without exception, accomplished isho healers, and can manipulate body isho to stun, inflict a painful burn, or most frighteningly, kill without any noticeable wound. Yohonzle Kumkwik of Meard attempted a synthesis of these styles in the last century with his 'Seven Isho System' of Chishodo, supposedly derived from all seven of the Lunar Buddhist schools. At the time, scornful Lunar Buddhist masters remarked that all that had done was to shuffle round the syllables of Shochido; how successful he was in his enterprise we shall explore in the next chapter, 'The 35th Century and Beyond'. Lezershildirinkhantralle (Crugar style, developed during the Captivity of the Iscin Races) Little is known of the actual content of this style, which as far as the author knows is no longer taught in Crugardom. It is included here due to its historical importance as the first recorded Crugar fighting system. Antiscinadralle (Crugar style, developed during the first wars with Gauss, c. 675 PC) The classic crugar fighting techniques Gausser children are taught to beware of - swiping at the face, leaping at an enemy to unbalance them, snarling and spitting to demoralize an opponent, and so on. Cugharimitsitsian (Crugar style, developed c.2700 PC) The invention of Autoln Cheminic, a crugar Tauch-Kie unsatisfied with the shortcomings of Antiscinadralle. Cugharimitsitsian is designed to mimic the fighting style and ferocity of the crugar's illustrious cougar ancestors, and employs the strength and flexibility of the crugar frame to the utmost in high-level leaps and pounces, mid-air twists, and much ground-level manoeuvring on all fours. Srishildirinadralle (Crugar style, developed c.800 PC) Srishildirinadralle was developed during wars with bronth, and is also taught to crugar warriors who will have to face thombo cavalry in battle. Leaping strikes and kicks are combined with low-level swipes at a bronth's relatively unprotected legs, with virtually no techniques that strike in at a 'normal' level, making this a very strange style to watch in the practice hall. Raumkhelle (Cygra style, c.700 PC) Developed during the first cygra-ramian war, and taught to all cygra children since this date, this discipline is equally effective against ramian, humans and crugar, and is thus of especial value. The specialty of this style is a ground-level attack on all fours, followed by a terrifically rapid spring up to full bipedal height once inside the opponent's range. Tchev-chira (Ramian style; date of origin unknown) An ancient ramian style developed for use against cleash, based on the premise that a cleash attacks with its head and body thrust forward, thus asking for a kick or thump underneath the chin where the carapace is weak. An attempt to strike this area will make the cleash pull back, thus making it present its equally vulnerable abdominal body joint for a low kick. Tchev-chira thus combines high strikes with low kicks in quick succession. Tchevrokent (Ramian style; date of origin unknown) The style normally taught for use against man-sized opponents, utilizing the great length of the ramian arm to keep an antagonist at a distance. The arms are kept bent due to the unlikely nature of a straight haymaker delivered by an arm the length of a ramian's coming in unnoticed. Strikes are conducted by punching or clawing at an opponent, thereby straightening the arm. Tchev-iridzent (Ramian style; date of origin unknown) Originally developed by ramian shirm-eh traders for use against corastin, but equally effective against bronth, tchev-iridzent uses long, low ground-level sweeping kicks to attack the ankles of the target bronth, thus taking his legs out from under him and taking away his height advantage. Codichi-yachan-tche (Ramian style; date of origin unknown) Named after the process of mowing coditch using a 'clearing iron' to clear away fallen stalks, and a 'sweeping iron' to cut a swath, codichi-yachan-tche employs two hard-swords, one long one to make and parry sweeping blows, and one short one for straight-line stabs and blocks. Ubberboggidus (literally, 'Upper Atmosphere Fighting Technique'; Salu, date of origin unknown) The only salu martial art witnessed by surface dwellers, Ubberboggidus was developed to teach fighting in an air-breathing environment, and uses short, fluid wardoffs similar to the hand motion of a swimmer palming away water, combined with rapid jabbing hand strikes, usually at the face or upper body, using straight fingers. Kicks are not taught, as they unbalance the body, and salu have an unreasoning fear of falling. Trit Hon Trith Cneemeel o-Lotchonwon-a (Thriddle style; date of origin unknown) A single-minded kicking style, involving straight-line kicks at all heights, including jumping kicks, stop kicks, and leg wardoffs.
